Difficult emotions aren't meant to be earned, fixed, or make to disappear. They're part of being human.

Nobody wants to feel sad. Nobody wakes up hoping to feel anxious, rejected, angry, lonely, or heartbroken. So it makes sense that one of the most common questions in therapy is: “Why do I have to feel this? What if I just don’t want to?”

The truth is, difficult emotions aren't something that need to be earned, fixed, or immediately made to disappear. They are simply a part of being human. And while it may feel easier to push an unpleasant emotion away, emotions that aren't acknowledged don’t necessarily disappear. Sometimes, they simply find another way to get our attention.

## Avoiding an Emotion Doesn’t Make It Go Away

When an emotion feels uncomfortable, the brain naturally looks for ways to create distance from it. We might distract ourselves, stay busy, scroll, overeat, overwork, seek reassurance, numb out, or tell ourselves that we're “fine.”

These strategies aren’t inherently bad. Sometimes distractions or taking a break is exactly what we need. The problem arises when avoidance becomes our primary way of relating to difficult emotions. The more we consistently avoid an emotion, the more threatening it can begin to feel.

Instead of learning *“I can feel sad sometimes and move through it,”* we learn, *“Sadness is unbearable and I have to get away from it.”* Feeling an emotion doesn’t guarantee that it will disappear immediately. But avoiding it can make us increasingly afraid of experiencing it.

## Emotions Are Information

Emotions are our heart's way of communicating to us. They may not be telling us the whole truth, but they are telling us *something.* **Anger** might signal that a boundary has been crossed. **Sadness** might point toward loss or an unmet need. **Anxiety** might signal uncertainty or a perceived threat. **Loneliness** might remind us that connection matters. **Grief** can reflect the depth of something or someone we cared deeply about.

That doesn’t mean every emotion requires immediate action. Instead, emotions can be treated as information to notice rather than instructions to follow. When we allow ourselves to feel, we give ourselves an opportunity to listen to messages that are already there.

Sometimes, the idea of “feeling your feels” might sound terrifying because it can feel like opening the floodgates. But feeling an emotion does not mean endlessly sitting inside it. Healthy emotional processing isn’t about drowning in our emotions. It's about developing the capacity to notice them, understand them, care for ourselves through them, and eventually allow them to move through us.

Yes, sometimes we may need to avoid our feelings to get through the day, but when it is continually pushed away, the underlying experience may remain unresolved. This can show up as irritability, disconnection, chronic stress, difficulty concentrating, unhealthy relationship patterns, or feeling emotionally numb. Sometimes, we become so used to avoiding certain emotions, that we lose touch with what we actually need. When we lose touch with ourselves and the world around us, life becomes unfulfilling.

Therapy is a wonderful resource for building the tools and the safety needed to process through difficult emotions. If you may be considering therapy, and you're located in or near Beaverton, feel free to [contact us](https://www.counseling-360.com/contact) to see if we may be a good fit!
