When the Holidays Aren't Merry and Bright

It's normal to struggle to find that "merry and bright" feeling during the holidays. Rather than admit defeat, here are ways to combat it and work your way through the season.

Flashing lights, holiday cheer, and the unspoken pressure to give the perfect gift — tis the season! But for many, what’s known as “the most wonderful time of the year” feels anything but. If for you, the holidays aren’t merry and bright, you are not alone.

Each year, the end-of-year traditions seem to arrive faster and with them can come dread, numbness, and a stronger connection to our dear friend, the Grinch. For some, the holidays highlight grief in its many forms, the pressure to feel joyful, financial strain, difficult family dynamics, and a tangle of complicated emotions.

Not to mention having to plan travels, wrap presents, decide who's bringing what, and try to resist the urge to yet another sugar cookie. It's giving…. Exhausting!

We know Scrooge wasn’t born bitter. Rather, he lived a lifetime of hardships that caused his heart to be cold— and maybe this season is a reminder to offer yourself that same compassion and grace he eventually found.

If this time of year feels heavy rather than joyful, here are a few ways to lighten the load:

    • Prioritize self-care. Listen to what your mind and body are asking for and give yourself permission to meet those needs.
    • Set personal boundaries. With family, friends, work, and even with yourself. Boundaries can create breathing room when you feel overwhelmed or drained.
    • Acknowledge your feelings. Check in with yourself each day and allow space for whatever emotions are present — even the uncomfortable and difficult ones.
    • Create your own traditions that feel important to you. This will allow for some enjoyment for the years to come.
  • Find those moments of joy and connection that feel meaningful. Calling an old friend, starting conversation with your neighbor, or chatting with the check out gal at Freddies. Connection is a way to fill your heart with love.

When the holidays become nothing more than extra weight for you to carry, reaching out for support can make all the difference. Therapy offers a space to process your emotions, understand your experience, and find ways to create more ease during this difficult season.
