With social media being at its all time high for usage and consumption, people are talking more about mental health than ever before. As therapists, we see a lot of people eager to heal from their trauma, to “fix” themselves and they want it to happen quickly. However, as we know, healing is an ongoing, ever lasting journey that evolves through time. But what if there was an accelerated therapy that can be provided in one session?
Accelerated Resolution at its Core
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) was developed by Laney Rosenzeig in 2008 and has since grown immensely in popularity due to its healing potential. Similarly to EMDR, ART is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy that uses bilateral eye movements to help clients address specific problems such as PTSD, anxiety, phobias, etc.
The client is to match their “presenting problem” with a specific memory, called a “scene” to use throughout the session. Ideally the scene represents the first, the worst or the most relevant experience when the problem was triggered. In order for ART to be effective, the scene must bring up negative sensations so they can be processed out.
Using a script, a trained and certified ART therapist guides the client through a process of eye movements and Voluntary Image Replacement to remove and replace all negative feelings and sensations attached to the memory. Think of it like a vacuum sucking out the heavy stuff and replacing it with a sense of positivity and lightness.
Who is ART Right for?
This type of therapy can be used to treat most mental health disorders and issues. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Generalized and Social Anxiety Disorders, attachment, abandonment and self-esteem issues, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder are just a few common examples.
ART requires little verbal processing so it works well with those who struggle with talk therapy. It can be provided in person or virtually and each target problem can be addressed within one session, though sometimes requiring more.
At Counseling 360, we have certified ART providers who may be able to help you go through the process of living your life without suffering. Feel free to contact us with any questions or to see if Accelerated Resolution Therapy may be a good fit for you.
