The Pros and Cons of Telehealth Therapy

Over the past several years, therapy has expanded beyond the traditional office setting. Today, many clients use words like telehealth, virtual therapy, or online counseling interchangeably. At Counseling 360, we offer both in-person and telehealth services so you can choose what works best for your life and comfort level.

Currently, all of our therapists offer telehealth. Our virtual sessions are conducted through a HIPAA-compliant platform that is easily accessed from any device. This is integrated with our secure electronic health record system, ensuring privacy and confidentiality.

Like most things in life, there are pros and cons to both in-person and online therapy.

The Pros of Telehealth Therapy

1. Convenience and Flexibility

Telehealth eliminates commute time and makes it easier to fit therapy into busy schedules. This can be especially helpful for working professionals, students, and parents.

2. Increased Access

If you have limited transportation, live farther away, or have mobility concerns, online therapy removes barriers to care.

3. Scheduling Ease for Adolescents and College Students

Teens with packed school and activity schedules may benefit from virtual appointments that can take place from home.

4. Comfort of Your Own Space

Some clients feel more relaxed opening up from their home environment.

For many, telehealth makes therapy possible when it otherwise wouldn’t be.

The Cons of Telehealth Therapy

1. Technology Challenges

Internet issues, computer glitches, or platform disruptions can interrupt sessions.

2. Privacy Concerns at Home

Clients may worry about others overhearing conversations, especially in shared living spaces.

3. Limited Nonverbal Cues

Therapists rely on body language, posture, and subtle emotional shifts. While much can still be observed virtually, in-person sessions allow for a fuller understanding of nonverbal communication.

4. Less Containment for Some Clients

Many therapists, including members of our team, find that the office environment can provide a stronger sense of structure, safety, and emotional containment, especially in the early stages of therapy.

When We May Recommend In-Person Therapy

While telehealth is effective, we often encourage clients, when possible, to attend at least the first few sessions in person. This can help build rapport and create a strong therapeutic foundation.

Children and adolescents, in particular, tend to respond better in person, where engagement and connection are often easier to establish.

When Telehealth May Be the Best Fit

We may recommend telehealth if transportation is difficult, if schedules are tight, or if attending in person would prevent someone from receiving care altogether. Ultimately, many clients choose online therapy simply because it feels right for them.

So, Which Is Better?

The truth is: neither option is universally “better.” Both in-person and telehealth therapy are effective. The right choice depends on your needs, comfort level, and life circumstances.
