Family Systems Therapy

Work together with your family members, sharing perspectives, and understanding that when one struggles, everyone struggles.

Family Systems Therapy (also called family or systemic therapy) treats the family as an emotional unit. It’s based on the idea that problems are best understood in the context of relationships: when one family member struggles, it affects everyone. Sessions often involve several family members or couples together. Your therapist guides the group to improve communication, change unhelpful patterns, and strengthen support among members. The therapy also considers how cultural or generational influences affect the family.

Helps With

Depression, substance use, eating disorders, and other mental health issues that involve family dynamics. It’s often used for marital conflict, parenting and childhood behavior problems (like ADHD), and coping with major life stressors (divorce, illness, etc.).

How It Works

Family members learn to share perspectives. The therapist may use tools (like genograms) to map relationships and might coach new ways of handling conflict. Everyone works together to solve problems, which can strengthen family bonds.

Benefits

Research shows family-based approaches can improve outcomes for depression, addiction, relationship distress, and childhood behavior issues. When the family heals as a whole, individual members often feel more understood, supported, and empowered.
