Multicultural Counseling
Also known as culturally-sensitive therapy. Your cultural background is respected and integrated in this therapeutic approach.
Multicultural Counseling (also called culturally-sensitive therapy) respects and integrates your cultural background into treatment. It recognizes that factors like race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and immigration history shape a person’s mental health. In this approach, your therapist learns about your identity and unique experiences, and tailors treatment to fit your worldview and values. Our counselors are trained in multicultural methods and pay close attention to how culture and identity affect both the individual and the family dynamics.
What It Addresses
Issues related to diversity and identity, such as prejudice, immigration or acculturation stress, and cultural conflicts. Any mental health concern (anxiety, depression, trauma) may be viewed through a cultural lens to better understand its impact.
Who Benefits
Clients from diverse or marginalized backgrounds – for example, people of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, or multicultural families – often find this approach helpful. It also helps anyone whose values and beliefs are central to their well-being and healing.
Approach
We create an inclusive, respectful space and may adapt therapy techniques to your cultural norms (such as involving family or community resources). Your therapist works to understand your perspective and may address social justice or community issues alongside personal ones.
